The owners of this detached bungalow approached us to design an extension that would move the living space of the home from the north side to the south side, to capture all the light and warmth of the sun, and to take in the beautiful views of the Dublin Mountains. The house is located at the entrance to a quiet estate in Knocklyon, on the corner with a main road, providing the house with a certain level or prominence. Yet, hidden behind mature hedging, the house still enjoys privacy.
The butterfly roof is designed to complement the existing roof shape whilst adding drama to the otherwise regimented suburban streetscape. It also provides glazing at high level, bringing in as much light as possible, and the corner glazing allows views in all directions – into the garden and beyond to the mountains. Materials include grey slate stone and zinc, complimenting the neutral tones of the house, and allowing the extension to form an integral part of the home.
